In the aftermath of the 1994 Geralda hurricane, 175 families of the poorer district of Antananarivo found themselves homeless. They then accepted to be taken care of by the famonjena association and to move out of Antananarivo , 15 km south of the capital city, with a view to being provided new accomodation. For two years, the families were then put up under tents. Then, thanks to the help amongst of th Southern Baptist Convention, the Volunteers for Progress, the United Nations Children's Fund (formerly UNICEF) and the Abbé Pierre Foundation, the tents made way for provisionnal houses which are now making way for permanent houses.
The rehousing scheme is in the process of being finished and the accompanying programme of the Famonjena association is aiming at helping the village equip itself with lasting social and economic structures.
